Asthma is a disease in which air passage in lungs gets inflamed resulting in improper breathing, chest congestion, inflammation and coughing. Asthma can be mild, moderate or severe, depending upon the frequency of the inflammation of the air path. Today, six out of every 110 people are suffering from this chronic (long lasting) disease. Children are more likely to suffer this disorder than adults. Those with no family history of asthmatic condition can also suffer from it.
Diet for Asthma:
Abstain from food for a few days and live only on fruits, sprouts, leafy vegetables, pulses and lemon juice, etc. especially during severe attacks.
Honey: You may add honey to milk, lukewarm water or in lemon water. This not only detoxifies your body, assimilate harmful chemicals, soften the mucus (and also prevent further formation of thick mucus by strengthening pulmonary tissues) and thus enhance breathing process, nurtures your skin.
Junk food, fried, fatty, oily and spicy foods; milk products, egg, caffeine, chocolates, shop bought 'long life' cakes, white (refined) sugar, should be completely avoided by the asthma patient.
The idea behind such dietary changes is to avoid foods that aggravate ones asthma. Asthma sufferers should not overeat and should also eat food slowly, chewing it properly. This will help in proper digestion and prevent inflammation and other stomach and lung-related problems such as reflux, thick mucus formation, difficulty in breath in and breath out. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
Causes of Asthma:
Asthma is caused due to contraction or inflammation in air path/lungs. The contracted airways prevent air to pass through lungs and thus results in cough, congested chest, thick mucus and difficulty in normal breathing. There is still a debate for considering asthma a hereditary disease although it is also found in people with no such family history.
Inflammation and contraction are not the only reasons; asthma is also caused due to triggering factors. These triggering factors can be anything that stimulates an immune response within the airways. Smell of tobacco, feather and skin of animals and bird are common factors. Triggers also include dust, pollen grains, animal dandruffs, toxic smell, strong fragrance, medicine etc. When triggers enter into the breathing system, the lungs contract and also form thick mucus that prevent further contraction. Rigorous exercise also causes asthma in some people. Mild exercise, however, are good for asthmatic patients, it is advised that the patient should use inhaler before starting the exercise. Foods items like egg, fish and milk also cause contraction of lungs and thus are triggers.
Symptoms of Asthma:
Person suffering from asthma can suffer from its severe attack at any time. This seriously affects their day-to-day life activities and they then becomes helpless. The symptoms of asthma are: • Inflammation in chest • Congested chest • Cough • Thick mucus formation • Improper breathing • Breathing with sound of a whistle • Trouble in speaking • Choked lungs
Different symptoms present themselves in different patients to varying degrees of severity. Patients with minor or moderate asthma can also get these attacks occasionally. However, patients suffering from severe asthma may get asthmatic attacks at anytime and finds difficulty in sleeping, talking, and movement. |
